1. Contact Sheet

People often ask me how many photos I take at any given wedding. Obviously the amount varies, but not by that much. I would say on average I end up having about 800-1000 photos on my flash memory card. People flip when they hear me blurt out a figure like that, but then I explain how I work. That’s why I’ve decided to post a new entry from time to time called “Contact Sheet”. Back in the good ole days of film, we used to have a look at the contact sheets of each roll to pick out the best shots. For those of you who don’t know what a contact sheet is, I’ll let you do some google searching. Here is one example at a wedding I photographed last weekend. Which photo is the strongest? You be the judge.

  8. Paris Restaurant Find

The other night I had just finished a photo shoot around 20h30. It was a beautiful balmy evening and so I decided to head over to St. Germain des Pres for a drink and some dinner. I stumbled across this wonderful little bistro which also happens to be listed in Fooding. Two thumbs up for sure for “Le Bistro de l’Alycastre”. Cheers!

  9. Photo of the Day

Everyone had just come out of the town hall following the civil ceremony and the bridesmaids were extremely enamored by her dress. The group of little girls decided that they were going to be the photo props which made for a cute portrait. This wedding took place about 45 minutes west of Paris in the countryside near the Brie region.

  11. Helmut Newton exhibit: Grand Palais Paris

This is the first retrospective of one of the world’s most famous photographers. It is taking place from March 24 until June 17 in the newly restored South-East gallery of the Grand Palais. Helmut Newton was a German-Australian photographer. He was best known for his erotically charged black and white fashion photography. He settled in Paris in 1961. His work was widely published in magazines such as French Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.

  12. Photo of the Day

It almost seems as if I took this shot in a studio, right? Well actually this couple had just recently moved into their new apartment and the walls were freshly painted. The space was pretty much void of furniture which gave the clean studio look and feel. The rest of their wedding day was lot’s of fun and I’m happy to know that I’ll be photographing one of their relative’s weddings in Paris this summer.

  14. One of my favorite Paris street shots was just featured as part of a new series on the online photo magazine “Pictory”. The curator of the site Laura Brunow Minor, has written an interesting commentary about the overall knowledge of photography in Paris. She says,

“But what really struck me was that I felt, for the first time, that I was in a place where people understood photography. Normal people, most people. In a fundamental, mainstream, genuine way. I perused some very special art book stores, noticed high quality galleries all around town, and even found black and white photo postcards for sale on most corners. Many of my photographer friends here in the US have told me since that they sell most of their work to Parisians. I’m not surprised.”

After having lived in Paris since 2004 I also find this true.

  15. Paris engagement session on “French Wedding Style”

Thanks to Monique for featuring Sandy and Apollo’s engagement session on her very cool and comprehensive blog “French Wedding Style”. I really had a wonderful time photographing this pre-wedding session in Paris. They came all the way from Los Angeles California and wanted nice shots of them in the City of Lights with a modern, yet vintage twist. I look forward to seeing their wedding photos from San Diego this summer.
